Linda's Food Garden
Mareetsane,
North West
About Linda
Gardening Experience:
Intermediate
I really enjoy the course and find the
material excellent!
My friend Jo and I have four dog girls, six geese, 20 kapokkie chickens
and many wild birds. The two of us will be enjoying all our herbs and
veggies.
Living in a small town has many advantages, but…, finding seedlings,
that is a real disadvantage! Even getting seeds for the crops I want to
plant is not an easy task.
We bought a small farm of 52 hectares and are planning to move there as
soon as the house is liveable. I can only visit the farm over the
weekends because I work fulltime in Mafikeng, some 40km from where I
live now. Needless to say, I can not start with my real herb and veggie
garden at our new place. I am putting everything I learn to practice
where I live now. By the time I move to my new home I will be an expert
herb and veggie gardener!!

In the before photo, to the top left,
is our lusern, and to the right of the lusern, our garlic. The bed
bottom left, also garlic with one row of carrots. The white “flags”
around the carrots are my scarecrows. Long pieces of plastic carry bags
tied to pieces of twigs. Being long and thin, they move easily and make
a noise as well! Works for me.
The second picture shows my four beds marked out. Beds are 0.6m x 3m
long. Paths are all 0.3m wide. Total area of my garden 14m².
The third picture shows my helper digging in the cow manure and bonemeal.
Even my little worsie lend a helping hand now and then! This is where my
help stopped.
In the last picture my third attempt to build and level my beds after
85mm of rain (I am not complaining) washed away my previous beds. I did
all the levelling myself. Not bad for 55 years young.
My first seeds are planted. I am waiting for seedlings from a friend
which I will plant this weekend...
