Fiona's Food Garden

Cape Town, Western Cape

About Fiona

Gardening Experience: Intermediate

I live in Cape Town. I have 3 married daughters, and 5 grandchildren and another on the way. We live with a precious German Shepherd who is hyperactive and a hooligan! I am the Garden Buyer for a large Home Store Company and am passionate about my job. My husband was re-trenched 2 years ago and we started growing our own organic veggies with some minor successes. I need some training and structure in the planning. Looking forward to this course and reaping all the lovely rewards.

I am only starting on the first 3 beds that I have already got laid out. As time goes on I will change the beds and add on to them.

Picture no 1 is the bed with the Swiss chard that will be removed today. My first 2 beds where I am putting in perennial herbs (1a) and annual herbs (1b) are only 2m x 1m and run from W to E. I am not sure if I should change them later on. The middle bed is 9m x 1m and runs S to N and I am going to plant lettuce, dwarf beans, beetroot and baby marrows. I think I will also try baby carrots and baby cabbage in a small way. (A friend says they are easier to grow than normal carrots).

So my preparation has started with compost, manure, bone-meal and agricultural lime. The 3rd pic is the fenced area to keep Hooligan Tess out of the veggie garden and the area that I will prepare next.
